LANGHE heading

THE LANGHE

Villa Ribota is situated right in the heart of the Langhe, one of Italy’s best and most varied wine producing areas. Recently recognised with UNESCO World Heritage status, vines stretch in every direction, broken only by hazelnut groves, hilltop villages and medieval castles.

The pace of life is slow here and tourism is still low-key. There is no traffic, no strip malls, shops close for lunch, people are happy to stop and talk, and lunch can often take several hours. Wine tastings can even last an entire afternoon. Mind you, with Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto, Nascetta and many more wines produced in just this area, it’s easy to see why!

The Langhe isn’t just about wine… the International Slow Food movement is based just a few minutes from the Villa, truffle hunters scour the forests beneath the house in search of white and black truffles and there are dozens of amazing restaurants to choose from, from tiny Osterie to three-Michelin-starred destinations, such as Piazza Duomo in Alba.

Thanks to the area’s royal past, the food in the Langhe is not your typical Italian fare; it is more delicate, richer and with an emphasis on fresh, local produce. And if you like your holidays more active there are a whole range of sports to choose from; the road cycling is some of the best in the world, or jump on a mountain bike and head into the vines. There is hiking, golf, and, of course, swimming!

THE BAROLO ZONE

Villa Ribota is in the Barolo zone, a group of just 11 villages within which one of the world’s greatest red wines, Barolo, can be produced. Each of the villages contains a ‘Cantina Comunale’, a cellar where you can taste (and buy) all of the wines produced within that village. What’s more, you could spend a very enjoyable lifetime tasting wine with the local producers and never make it to all of them.

PIEDMONT

The Langhe is an area within Piedmont, in Italy’s north-west. Bordered by France, Switzerland and Liguria, it is a wonderfully varied area made up of mountains, lakes, foothills and plains. On a clear day, it feels as if you can touch the snow-capped Alps, dominated by Monviso. You can ski in the morning, swim in the sea in afternoon and drink Barolo among the vineyards in the evening.

CLIMATE

Winter can be cold, occasionally snowy and always beautiful. Crisp, clear days are perfect for walking (or snowshoeing) through the vines, and if you want to be even more active, the nearby mountains offer great skiing. For the less active, winter is the time to open a bottle of Barolo and snuggle in front of the fire. Temperatures in the winter average 5 degrees centigrade but can go as low as -10.

Spring brings a wonderful feeling of the whole area waking up as the cool of winter gives way to warm, sunny days and the vineyards burst into life. It can occasionally be rainy, though any wet weather is generally short-lived. Average temperatures are 16 degrees centigrade while it can get as warm as 24 degrees.

Summer is warm, with temperatures averaging 24 degrees centigrade. There are usually a couple of weeks where the temperature goes much higher, but on the whole it is a very pleasant time of year. And of course, if things do get too hot, you can always jump in the pool! Summer is also a great time to try a cool glass or two of Novello’s own white wine, Nascetta.

Autumn is magnificent with foggy mornings, sunny days and chilly evenings. There is the grape harvest, it’s white truffle season and the vines take on a stunning array of colours. Autumn in the Langhe should be on everyone’s must-see list. Average temperatures are around 18 degrees centigrade, while it can sometimes be as warm as 25 degrees or as cool as 12 degrees.
